Mauritius Wildlife
Encounter Mauritius at Its Most Wild
Where Endemic Species Still Roam Free
Mauritius is one of the world’s great biodiversity hotspots. Once home to the dodo — the most famous extinct bird in history — the island has worked hard to preserve and restore its unique flora and fauna, from the pink pigeon to the Aldabran giant tortoise.
Today, a collection of extraordinary nature reserves, zoological parks and bird sanctuaries make wildlife encounters an unmissable part of any stay on the island. Our concierge team can arrange private guided visits, ensuring you make the most of every encounter.
La Vanille Reserve
6 hectares housing 2,000 crocodiles, 500 giant tortoises, over 20,000 insect species and a lush tropical garden — one of the Indian Ocean’s great zoological parks.
Walking with Lions
The island’s first lion encounter, available at Casela Nature Leisure Park — an exclusive opportunity to walk with lions and cheetahs in a semi-wild setting
Casela Bird Park
Home to the rare Mauritian pink pigeon and over 120 bird species, as well as tigers, lemurs, macaques and diverse reptiles in the Black River Gorges area.
Black River Gorges
The island’s largest national park hosts endemic birds saved from extinction by the World Wildlife Society — including the pink pigeon and the echo parakeet.
La Vanille Réserve des Mascareignes
Located 2km from the Rivière des Anguilles, La Vanille Reserve is a remarkable 6-hectare zoological park that is home to 2,000 Nile crocodiles — some measuring 5 to 6 metres in length — as well as 500 tortoises including Giant Aldabran Turtles.
The park’s insectarium houses over 20,000 species, including butterflies and beetles, while the tropical garden features giant bamboos, banana trees and an impressive variety of palms. A fascinating half-day for wildlife enthusiasts of all ages.
