An Island Written in Artefacts

Mauritius carries centuries of layered history — Dutch, French, British, Indian, Chinese, Creole — and its museums tell that story with remarkable depth and care.

From the world’s oldest sugar mill turned immersive adventure to a colonial-era naval museum on the banks of the Mahebourg waterfront, each institution offers a different window into how this island became what it is today.

Sugar Museum

Follow 250 years of sugarcane history through the beautifully restored Beau Plan mill — complete with rum tasting at the end.

Postal Museum

Three galleries tracing Mauritius’s philatelic heritage, including the legendary 1847 Post Office stamps, among the world’s rarest.

Naval Museum

Housed in an 18th-century French colonial manor at Mahebourg, this museum holds relics from the legendary Battle of Grand Port.

Frederik Hendrik

Set on the south-east coast at the cradle of Mauritian history — the site of the island’s very first human settlement in 1638.

What Awaits You

Rising above the sea of green sugarcane fields like a great ship at anchor, the old Beau Plan sugar mill is a true history-maker and teller. By following the trail of the Sugar Adventure, you trace more than 250 years of island history.

The tour of the restored mill lasts about 90 minutes, ending with delightful sugar and rum tastings that make the perfect finale to a fascinating cultural afternoon.

National History Museum — Mahebourg

Housed in the graceful Château Gheude — a French colonial country house built around 1772 — the National History Museum sits in a 12-acre park on the banks of the Rivière La Chaux in Mahebourg.

It was here, in this historic building, that the wounded commanders of both the English and French squadrons were treated side by side after the Battle of Grand Port in 1810 — the only Napoleonic naval victory to be inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe.
